How Math and Technologies Are Connected

Math is an integral component of modern technology. Mathematical concepts are the foundation of all modern technology, from developing new medical treatments, to improving transport systems to developing energy resources. However, many students struggle to understand and accept the importance of math. It’s important to remember that no amount of math technology will substitute for a knowledgeable teacher.

Teachers should also be able help their students develop positive attitudes toward mathematics and use of technology. Pierce and Ball (2009) say that teachers can accomplish this by making the learning experience enjoyable for students by the use of digital tools like interactive whiteboards. They also stress the importance of ensuring that students are familiar with the software they’re using so they can use them effectively.

Another way in which math and technology are connected is through the use of mathematical models. These models are designed to facilitate the creation of sharable flexible and transportable representations of scientific and mathematical concepts. The model is a tool that aids in learning by offering a method of constructing and sharing public documents of thought (Lesh & Doerr, 2000).).

However, despite their benefits mathematical models can’t fully clarify the way in which math works as a technology within society. This is due to the perceived accuracy that mathematical truths convey. This is why the rigor of mathematically prescribed decisions is often cited as a factor in the absence of disagreement over things such as health risks from cellular phone radiation or economic policies.
